  2. The paper clipping of The Black Virgin Mary that Lily has can be a symbol. It represents Lily's mother because it once belonged to her and has a certain mystery to it that could connect Lily to more of who her mom was. It also represents the fact that the Virgin Mary could've been any color. It doesn't make her any more or less of what the bible claims her to be.

  14. "...your jar is open"; Chapter 2. This symbol means that opportunity is there waiting on whomever destins to grab. It'll be there waiting on you, if that's what you are after. This symbolizes a butterfly before full growth. Metamorphosis is over with and that caterpillar can now go and be a butterfly that it has prepared itself for. Comparibly, Lily can now be free and be the woman that she has been preparing herself to be.

Though Rasaleen is not trying to take the place of her actual mother, she is always their caring for her and helping her out when she needs it, and though lily and rosallen are from two different worlds, they both each share a connection as if they were mother and daughter. Symbol from Chapter 2
“Lily Melissa Owens, your jar is open.” At one point she kept some bees in a jar for too long. She turned the jar on its side to let the bees know that they were free. In this phrase, Lily is referred to as one of those bees that are being told that she is free to leave because the jar is open.

There are many symbols in this story “The Secret life of bees”. I believe the bees in the jar are one of the symbols. I also think that it is the most important symbol yet. The symbol of the bees in the jar is a symbol of Lily’s chance to finally get away and escape to her freedom.

I think the most important theme is the way T-Ray treats Lily. She is his daughter. He treats her as if she is a slave. He does not have any respect for her. She feels like she is a nobody.

  59. the biggest symbol in chapter 1 & 2 would be the picture of the black virgin mary. that picture is a symbol of the love lily has for her mother and far she was willing to go in order to have a part of her. After finding the picture lily left home to go find that piece of her that was missing. Her finding that picture signified a change about to happen in her life. The fact that she had nothing put hope in the pic to go off of made me feel as if it may have a big role in her life
